As I sit at my computer staring out into the carpark of our office block here in the beautifully neutral landscape that is Kent, I can't help but feel that little spark of joy that comes with being warm and dry whilst others are outside getting soggy for various reasons. As much as working in an office can suck you dry of any real natural stimulation, staring out of a window at some tree's blowing around will be the extent of my connection to nature for at least 9 hours.
I look forward to the time that I will be walking home and have blackberries to pick off the bushes as I walk to the train station.
This too may be a thing of the past soon as I get ready to take my driving test at the end of this month and face the reality that I may soon be driving past all the natural sights, smells and touches I get to experience on my walks to the train station.
Although I will still have the choice to walk to work everyday, I’m afraid I will give in to the temptation that is the combustion engine and its comfy casing.
I don't agree 100% that I, as one person, can justify using up the earths resources just to get to work in the most personal convenient way, but on rainy days like this one I can really see the benefits of driving.
Should I do what the rest of the world does and just block out these thoughts and embrace the car or should I stand by my beliefs and put up with the rain and wind for the good of the environment? I understand that my impact will not be great considering the amount of road users that already exist, but I believe you should act in the way you think everyone should act. If everyone questioned whether or not they NEED the car and considered the sustainable alternatives then maybe the impact would be greater.
I am getting excited at the amount of people who are indeed waking up to the realisation that every little thing we do has a major effect on our surroundings as a whole. The movement to a more conscious society is an exciting shift to be a part of and I just want to do my bit.
